（ま）守る医学と教育 荒木寅三郎

慶応2年（1866年）～昭和17年（1942年）
荒木寅三郎は、板鼻で医業を営む荒木家に生まれました。板鼻小学校を卒業後、上京し、東京大学医学科に入学しました。郷里の板鼻に戻り家業を継いだ後、ドイツのストラスブルグ大学に留学し、帰国後には全国で最年少の医学博士となりました。
大正4年（1915年）に京都帝国大学（現在の京都大学）で初となる公選による総長に就任し、学習院院長や枢密顧問官などを歴任しました。戦前の碓氷・安中地区の小学校には、立身出世の象徴として荒木寅三郎の書が掲げられ、子どもたちの目標とされました。
安中市板鼻の龍的塚（りゅうてきづか）古墳の上に、荒木寅三郎の墓（安中市指定史跡）があります。

ARAKI Torasaburo
ARAKI Torasaburo was born into the Araki family, who ran a medical practice in Itahana. After graduating from Itahana Elementary School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo. He returned to his hometown of Itahana to take over the family practice, and later he traveled to Germany for further studies. Upon returning to Japan, he became the youngest Doctor of Medicine in the whole nation. In 1915, he became the first publicly elected president of Kyoto Imperial University (present-day Kyoto University). He served in various posts such as the president of Gakushuin and a Privy Councillor. In the Usui and Annaka districts in the pre-war period, he was regarded as a symbol of success and was held up as a role model for children in elementary schools.

Araki Tora Saburo
Araki Tora Saburo sinh ra trong gia đình Araki chuyên làm y học ở Itahana. Sau khi tốt nghiệp trường tiểu học Itahana, ông nhập học vào khoa y của Đại học Tokyo.
